They will be able to assist with language problems in an accident or arrest. In Australia, staff at Australian Passport Offices in big cities can help with:
– Issuing Certificates of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI). This certificate shows there’s no reason you can’t get married. They can also witness your signature on the application form.
– Legalizing documents (Apostilles and Authentications).

Likewise at times, other countries need to know that Australian documents are real. Additionally the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), through the Australian Passport Office. They, can prove that a signature, stamp, or seal on an Australian document is genuine. They do this by checking it against a sample they have on file. Lastly, they attach a certificate called an “authentication” or an “apostille” to confirm it’s real. This certificate is signed and sealed by DFAT staff. Note that DFAT can’t tell you what other countries need to make a marriage legal. Likewise for that information, you should contact the Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate of the country where you want to get married.
